Why Infection Control Matters:

First and foremost, infection control is of utmost importance in dental settings to prevent the spread of diseases. As a dental assistant, you will encounter a diverse range of patients with various oral health conditions. Some of which may carry infectious agents. Consequently, adhering to strict protocols is vital to protect both yourself and the patients from potential cross-contamination.

The following video will give you a good idea of what infection control looks like in a dental office.

The Role of Dental Assistants in Infection Control:

Dental assistants are the frontline defenders of infection control within dental clinics. To begin with, they are responsible for setting up and disinfecting treatment areas before and after patient appointments. Moreover, they ensure that all instruments and equipment are thoroughly sterilized, following standard procedures for infection prevention.

In addition, dental assistants take active measures to maintain the cleanliness of the clinic environment. For instance, they regularly disinfect chairs, countertops, and other surfaces to reduce the risk of disease transmission. Similarly, they enforce hand hygiene protocols and encourage patients to do the same before and after treatments.

Proper Waste Disposal:

Proper disposal of hazardous waste is a vital component. For this reason, dental assistants are well-versed in handling and disposing of waste materials safely. Furthermore, they segregate different types of waste, ensuring that contaminated materials are disposed of correctly.
