What Are Pit And Fissure Sealants?

Firstly, pit and fissure sealants are a preventive dental treatment designed to protect the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars from tooth decay. Secondly, these teeth have natural pits and fissures on their chewing surfaces. Thirdly, said surfaces can trap food particles and bacteria. Therefore, leading  them to be more susceptible to cavities.

Moreover, sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to these vulnerable areas. Consequently, creating a smooth, protective barrier that prevents food and bacteria from getting trapped. How Do Dental Assistants Help With Pit And Fissures?

Firstly, the process of applying pit and fissure sealants is relatively simple and painless. Further, here’s how dental assistants help with pit and fissure sealants:

  1. First, assisting the Dentist: To begin with, dental assistants prepare the dental operatory, ensuring all necessary instruments and materials are readily available for the treatment.

  2. Second, educating Patients: For example, assistants may educate patients about the benefits of pit and fissure sealants and the importance of preventative dental care

  3. Third, preparing the Teeth: Before applying the sealants, dental assistants ensure the teeth are clean and dry. After, they may use air/water syringes and other instruments to remove any debris or plaque from the chewing surfaces.

  4. Fourth, isolating the Teeth: For instance, dental assistants may place a dental dam or cotton rolls around the teeth being treated to keep them isolated and dry during the procedure.

  5. Fifth, applying the Sealants: The assistant may assist the dentist in applying the pit and fissure sealants to the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars.

  6. Sixth, evaluating the Sealants: After the sealants are applied and cured, dental assistants may evaluate the placement and ensure that the sealants have bonded securely to the teeth.

  7. Seventh, post-Procedure Care: Lastly, dental assistants may provide post-procedure instructions to the patients, including information on eating and oral hygiene practices after the sealant application.
